Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Raffles |
In 2008 and 2009 Devin held two raffles to benefit the animal rescue organization Best Friends Animal Society, the nation's largest sanctuary for homeless, abused, and abandoned animals. The winners' pets were chosen to become characters in upcoming novels in the RED HOT series. All proceeds went to benefit Best Friends. Besides the two winning animals, Devin chose a number of other animals whose people had entered the raffles to feature in small, walk-on roles. Please meet all these animals here, and then get to know them better in Devin's novels!

Ross |
|
| The 2008 Best Friends Red Hot Raffle Winner!
Ross was a Basset Hound from Austin, Texas, owned by Dr. Camille Hemlock. Ross was famous for dressing up in costumes! This characteristic comes in handy when he makes an appearance in RED HOT LIBERTY as an American flag-wearing dog belonging to Liberty True. Liberty is a tin-foil-hat-wearing, conspiracy-theory-believing rebel patriot who is fond of standing Ross in the corner and saying the pledge of allegiance to him.
They are very patriotic!
Sadly, Ross passed away four months after winning the raffle, but he will be forever immortalized in RED HOT LIBERTY.

Bocker |
|
| The 2009 Best Friends Red Hot Raffle Winner!
Bocker is a Labradoodle from Athens, New York, owned by Marie Shelto. Bocker is a model, actor, therapy dog, and reading tutor who has had roles in Steven Spielberg's movie War of the Worlds, and Julia Roberts' movie Eat Pray Love. Because of his celebrity status he will be featured in the upcoming novel RED HOT STARS as an actor in a Steven Spielberg movie! It is a case of art imitating life imitating art...

Marina Night |
|
| Angie Clark entered both raffles and didn't win, but Devin admired her dedication to the cause of helping animals. So her cat, Miss Marina Night Keiko Jemille, a natural mink Tonkinese, is going to be featured in future installments of the RED HOT series of novels as the spooky familiar of quirky Cuban psychic, Havana Santiago.
Look for her memorable debut in RED HOT LIBERTY!

Maddie |
|
| Maddie, who was part of the Cindy and Brian Coakley pack, was a fearless mountain-climbing wild child. The Coakleys also entered both raffles, but didn't win. Maddie is the inspiration for a cowdog who is the sister of prissy, pampered series regular Talisman. She is introduced in RED HOT LIBERTY in a chapter where she and Talisman get mixed up, and Talisman has to work as a cowdog for the day. The scene was so funny it inspired a novella spinoff told from the dogs' perspectives titled SHOW DOG SINGS THE BLUES. The Dog Writers Association of America nominated SHOW DOG SINGS THE BLUES as best humor book of 2011, and a portion of proceeds from its sale supports Aussie Rescue.
It is an Australian Shepherd Freaky Friday!

Tyler |
|
| Tyler is a snowshoe cat who was abandoned twice and ultimately rescued by Jennifer Bussott. In RED HOT LIBERTY he portrays a cat who is abandoned in foreclosed home. I hope his appearance in RED HOT LIBERTY will bring attention to the plight of animals caught as victims of the foreclosure crisis.
Thank you Jennifer for allowing him to be included in RED HOT LIBERTY.

Rex |
|
| Rex is a mixed-breed dog rescued by Donevon Murrell. Like most rescued animals, Rex has a miraculous story. Donevon rescued him, found him a home, he ran away from the home, and months later was rescued by Donevon again! Their connection seems so destined that Donevon's mother believes Rex is her reincarnated father who died in 2000. So, of course, Rex appears as a dog whom one of the characters in RED HOT LIBERTY believes is the reincarnated spirit of her late husband!
The universe is a mysterious place...

Lump |
|
| Lump is a very lazy cat owned by Amy Abern. As Amy says, Lump lives up to her name. She spends all day sleeping. Once a day she gets a burst of energy that lasts for about 37 seconds, racing around the apartment, lets out a glottal kind of meow, and then collapses onto her side. That is the extent of her daily exercise. So, Lump appears in hilarious fashion and a case of mistaken identity in RED HOT LIBERTY.
Amy woke Lump up to tell her she was going to be in a novel, she yawned, and she promptly went back to sleep.

Sami |
|
| Sami is an American Eskimo dog rescued by Lori Pavlo from the local animal shelter. Sami loves bling, so she appears in RED HOT LIBERTY as a bling-loving dog belonging to new rookie real estate agent Brooklyn Green. A pair of crazed criminals believe Sami's crystal necklace is being used by "the shadow people" to direct radio frequencies into their heads.
You just never know...
